The proposal of this project is to help to solve the dweling problem in Brazil.
The favelas, poor communities created in irregular areas, are a big social problem in the country and the people living there suffer a lot mainly because of the consequences from the rain and fires.
The best alternative is to improve the favelas by offering them piped water, sanitation, electricity and houses in better conditions.
To understand the user and the favela's way of life, I spent one weekend in the community Anita Garibaldi assisting in the construction of a prefab house together with a group of volunteers from the NGO um teto para o meu país (Click here to learn more about my experience).
From this experience I took some important insights:
The bad condition of the houses in the favelas are not due to lack of knowledge of the inhabitants in building these houses. This happens more because of the lack of good material and because favela's inhabitant live with the constant risk of their houses being taken from them. When the favela's inhabitants get the legal right of owning their houses, the favela tend to developt.
The idea of community there is very different from the idea of comunity in traditional neighbourhoods. People tend to have a closer relationship to their neighbors.
The houses and the entire comunity are always in transformation. New rooms are added to the house when in need of more space and new houses are built in empty spaces of the favela.
