I'm doing my graduation project about favela's urbanization and my main objective is to help to improve the life quality of people living there who suffer a lot from the lack of infrastructure of their houses. My project rely on industrial production to help to solve this problem.
It was a must to experience the lifestyle of people living in favelas, so I volunteered myself for a project called Um teto para o meu país. This NGO was created in Chile in 1997 and arrived in Brazil a few years ago. It is based in three steps. In the first one, premade houses are built by volunteers (mainly young undergradute people) for families living in poor communities. These families are picked up based on the conditions they are living and have to contribute with a small amount of money. In the second step, the NGO supports the family in different areas such as education, juridic issues and etc. so they can improve their lifequality. The last step intend on building full sustainable communities. This step wasn't reached in Brazil but is already been implemented in Chile.
The project try to show to the families that the house is not a gift but an achievement and that they have to keep fighting for their future. The project is great and it really have the power of transforming people's life. It was also very important for my project since it made me better understand what is a favela.
